The Specter of the UFC – The Rest of the Run

I’m not going to sugar coat this: I’m releasing the entire playlist from where you’re at to where I’m at. I’m going to just post the videos for you from here on, on YouTube, without another post on the subject. It’s taking a lot more of my time than I thought it would and rather than prolong it, I’m just going to go ahead with the videos as I fight… when my run is over, I’ll do a couple of exhibition “dream fights” I want and maybe I’ll figure out how to edit in audio for future videos.

Enjoy. (i.e. Go to YouTube)

The Specter of the UFC 8: Keep On Rollin’

DJ Allen vs Pip West
UFC Heavyweight Fight

Yeah, I’m fighting a guy called Pip… I don’t care what direction he’s from, either, I’m going to cave his face in with repeated strikes to his nose and I’m looking to make sure that Pip doesn’t do anything interesting enough to be worth anyone else’s time.

The Emerald Specter 6 – What’s Next?

EmeraldSpecterGraphic570

I’ve been trying to get things in order and I’m trying to keep things level. I want to advance myself, my goals, and make my website awesome in the process but I am working so much and trying to do so many other things that I don’t know how well I can keep everything going in the right direction.

What the vague hell am I talking about?

Work is occupying 40 solid hours of my time per week. There is a little bit of extra time on top of that, too, and that doesn’t even include the 5 hours of commute time every week to and from work. So, of the available 168 hours every week… leaving me 123 hours to NOT do work related things. If we also subtract the 8 hours of sleep per night, that is now 67 hours left to myself. I like playing Ingress with my wife and that takes up anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours per day. Let’s go with the higher option, for this example, which leaves me with 53 hours to myself. How many meals take up time? That’s about 7 hours less for the suppers and you see where I’m going with this.

What I’d like is to have more time. That isn’t going to happen, though, and I’m still trying to work my way up in the postal service… so I still have to play the game.

Ideally, I could get my requested days off when I want to instead of having 4 of 6 of them turned down for almost no good reason at all. I’m done playing THAT game, but I want to make sure that everyone knows that I am interested in keeping myself in the running for bigger and better things.

I don’t have much else to say at the moment, but know I am working at not working so hard. I have been “taking one for the team” so many times that I think it’s time the team takes one for me.

Be back for more…

Chess Specter 6 – Moving Forward

chess_specter300

I notice an uptick in traffic each and every time a column is published, so I’m going to see what happens when I go bonkers on the same day with a whole bunch of stuff getting put out. Are you ready?

Part of what I like to talk about chess is making the chess game, the event as a whole, something more of a spectacle than the game currently is… because what we have at the moment is a bunch of event at the physical location and some sideways reporting of the event, without any of the hoopla to go along with that.

Look at the UFC… no, really, take a long look at the UFC. While they don’t have the fight card stacked with huge names from top to bottom, they do have the headliners and at least one other big fight on the list and they promote the crap of out them. Why does chess put up a paltry effort in comparison?

Part of the problem, as I see it, is FIDE. The World Chess Federation is run by a corrupt politician, being influenced by corrupt politicians, not really investing in the thing that has them “in a place of power” at all. They want to sit in their ivory tower and look down on the rest of the world because they think no one else can do anything about it.

What about the Grand Chess Tour?

Some of the chess world has said that there shouldn’t be a single World Champion anymore, the chess world should be set up more like the tennis world… a series of tournaments to crown an ultimate winner at the end of the “season.” I’m not opposed to that scenario, but I also like the idea of a single champion.

Here’s where we move to make the UFC connection a little bit more connected. Take the Grand Chess Tour’s three tournament start this year. Is it a small start? Yes. Will it grow? Yes. Can they start promoting chess like chess is the only thing that matters? I don’t think so, but they need to in order to make a big impact. Why not promote so hard that anyone interested in the games can not only watch but WANT to watch.

Right now, the St Louis Chess Club is the one responsible for GCT broadcasts and the biggest downfall I see in their efforts is that there isn’t any means of watching the event after the fact. We have to watch live or we have to hunt, and hunt hard, for the replayability of the event. Is there pre-promotion? Not outside the inner chess circles. Do they have an idea for monetizing their enterprise? I don’t see a clear vision behind it.

It’s easy to be critical, mainly because I’m not involved. It’s also easy for me to sit back and say one thing and not provide an alternative in a tangible way. I will work on this tangible alternative… and I’m waiting for the right opportunity to do this (because I need the footage for this to work).

Your move.

Fitness Specter 27: Time to Start Again

I find myself in an odd predicament in my new city that I didn’t think would be a problem: I’m regaining all my weight. As of this morning, while I’m ashamed to report this, I hit 316 again. That does not make me happy.

There are three contributing factors that I can point to that have resulted in my “return to size” upward swing:

  1. Portion control is out of control
  2. I’m not doing exercises when I should be
  3. I’ve started drinking more often than I’d like

I ranked those in that order for a reason. My number one problem is, and always has been, portion control. I am back in the mindset of “I need the largest portion” whenever the option is given. I shouldn’t be in that mindset but it’s happened. I need to return to not even finishing my meals, having leftovers is not a terrible thing. Hell, I need to go back to full on splitting meals with my wife. That’s something that hasn’t happened in a good long time.

I’m making a pledge to get back on the wagon. I need to be held accountable for my terrible choices and I need to start watching my calories like a hawk again. I hate, and I mean really loathe, keeping track of every calorie I consume. The process is tedious, hard to remember to actually log, and I even forget things that contain calories once in a while. This will be necessary, though, as I struggle to keep my caloric intake to 2000 or less. Let me tell you that I drank that much last night in alcoholic beverages (okay, maybe not 2000 but pretty damn close).

First things first: start tracking calories. I’m going to eliminate one entire meal with a meal replacement shake (or just a protein shake, as that is essentially what I’m needing when I replace a meal. I have 3 or 4 varieties of protein powder at the moment so having some options won’t be a problem. When I do eat, I’m going to limit (severely) what I’m eating. Home based meals are not my problem, in case you were wondering, with the portion control… oddly enough, we don’t make enough to worry about eating too much most times. What I have issues with are the meals we eat out. Unless I’ve physically seen the portion of food at least once before, I’m going to assume that it is too large for me to eat all at once and plan to take at least a quarter of the meal home (or leave it there, or share it). There are a lot of wonderful places to eat in Portland and I think that getting my mindset back into the “don’t eat it all” mode will be important for losing weight.

Second thing, and this one I am most ashamed about: start exercising again. Cardio workouts are what I need, so no worries about muscle building at this time. I’m going to focus on the number that is my weight rather than how I might be able to get “bigger” in the muscles I’m interested in building. I think my split focus on weight loss and bodybuilding before may have been too much at once. I need to get rid of my belly first and foremost, since I know I’ll never look like Phil Heath, Kai Greene, or Shawn Rhoden. Not just because they’re all black, either.

Third, I need to lay off the alcohol. I’ve drank 4 out of the last 7 nights and that is uncalled for… even for being trapped inside with the sweltering heat we’re dealing with at the moment, the excuses need to stop. Had a 250 calorie beverage? Well, I guess you’ve just added 15 more minutes to your exercises tomorrow. That should slow my ass down on the drinking a bit.

I live in one of the healthiest cities in America: Portland, OR. I have the limitless options of things without corn syrup (any level), things that are organic, and things that are fresh. I’ve been making terrible food choices and I need to stop thinking like someone who is hungry and start thinking like someone who is hungry to lose some fucking weight.

Goal number one: lose at least 2 pounds a week. My expectation is much higher but I’ll be happy with 2 pounds per week. I mentioned above that I weighed in at 316 this morning… that means by the end of the week (I’m going to start using postal weeks, which start on Saturday, because that’s just easier on me) I should weigh no more than 314. Friday, July 24, I will weigh no more than 314. By the end of July, I’d like to weigh UNDER 300, which is another goal I’ll set for myself, but we shall see.

This is a new quest. This quest is to reach the achievement I had before (91 pounds lost) and keep going to reach my ultimate goal of 128 pounds lost. I chose 200 pounds to weigh before I started the first journey and I’m heading back in that direction.

Cheer me or get the fuck out of my way.

The Specter of the UFC 7: Two More Fights!

DJ Allen vs Aubrey Santiago
UFC Heavyweight Fight

Punch him in the face, punch him in the gut, punch him in the face if he gets back up. That’s my invented little UFC nursery rhyme. I like it, don’t you?

DJ Allen vs Rodney Pitts
UFC Heavyweight Fight

Yet another victim… I mean patient.

Also, I haven’t mentioned this, but I’ve been putting these videos in a playlist on YouTube for you… if you search out my channel (any of these links is on my channel) you can watch all the fights on YouTube in order. Nice, huh? Will my streak continue? Only time will tell…

The Specter of the UFC 6: Three Fight Extravaganza!

UFC_Career570

In a special “I’ve been busy, here’s your catch up” post… I’m giving you THREE fights in one! Enjoy the rocking and the rolling.

DJ “The Doctor” Allen vs Shigekazu Ito
UFC Heavyweight Fight

Ito was placed into my path by the UFC to be embarrassed. Yes, Dana White decided “this is a chance for me to really give Ito the business for stealing my Oreos last week.” I’ll help you out, Dana White, by pummeling the bejesus out of Ito and making him forget that his birthday exists. This is the fight that really makes you stand up and say “hey, DJ Allen is a fighter and he’s here to fight.” Or maybe not. Either way, the fight was decent.

DJ “The Doctor” Allen vs Jacob Jarvis
UFC Heavyweight Fight

Can I get a witness? A witness to the wave of destruction that is DJ “The Doctor” Allen? Several second round knockouts, now the wave of first round knockouts… who can stop this beast? Who could possibly waver the unshakeable UFC juggernaught that is DJ Allen?

DJ “The Doctor” Allen vs Julian Carvalho
UFC Heavyweight Fight

One more time for the new and exciting DJ Allen. This time, we get fed someone lower on the power rankings and honestly, they should have known better. Who could possibly stand toe to toe with me? Someone higher in the rankings could… like UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. Let’s not look past this opponent, though, we want to give him the beatdown he deserves.

The Specter of the UFC 5: Allen vs Orlov

UFC_Career570

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages… the time has come for the 1-0 DJ “The Doctor” Allen to venture out into the UFC and start taking on some real opponents. My first test? Orlov… some schmuck whom Dana White has decided will be a contest for the surgical precision of the Doctor.

DJ “The Doctor” Allen vs. Igor Orlov
UFC Heavyweight Fight

There isn’t much to say about this one, really. Igor Orlov is just your average Russian fighter who, like me, is missing his hair. There isn’t anything special about him, except the fact that his name is Igor… that is, of course, fairly special. He was abandoned at birth by his human parents and raised by sheep in the wild. He has only recently learned to use a modern bathroom and doesn’t really speak anything but sheep as a language. Hopefully I don’t knock him into the next century and stunt his progress. Well, maybe that is unavoidable.

The Specter of the UFC 4: The Ultimate Fighter Finale Fight

UFC_Career570

Welcome, friends and neighbors, to the Ultimate Fighter Finale… where I finally get my chance to earn that multimillion dollar contract to get into the UFC and show some of the punks of the heavyweight division who the real man is… or fight my way into relevance, depending upon your level of cockiness.

This is the first time I’m the main event… technically… but since this isn’t considered a true “main event’ position, it’s just two guys beating up each other in front of a larger crowd than I’m going to see for quite some time. Who is the victim… I mean opponent? Russell Vargas managed to fight his way into the finale with me… and here’s our fight:

DJ “The Doctor” Allen vs. Russell Vargas
The Ultimate Fighter Finale: Allen vs. Vargas

Enjoy the Doctor’s house call on this one. Starting with this column, the end will contain the full history of results, fights, and etc that I’ll be keeping up with. I was going to put them on that separate UFC page but I’ll worry about that when the career is over. So, without further ado, here’s the first of many “results.” (I hope):
